Helix nebula

This image of the Helix nebula (NGC 7293) is a colour composite of data from the Wide Field Imager, a 67-megapixel camera attached to the 2.2-metre Max Planck Society/ESO telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chile.

Oxygen atoms shine blue-green at the centre because of intense ultraviolet radiation from the 120,000 °C central star. Further out, hydrogen and nitrogen glow red. Remote galaxies can be seen through the centre of the nebula.
