18 June 1983: Sally Ride becomes the first American woman, and youngest astronaut, in space, 20 years after the first Russian woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova.
Sally later highlighted the American bias against women scientists and mission active astronauts. She became a great advocate for girls entering science and encouraged them to go for their goals, no matter what obstacles stood in the way.
