NASA Hubble Image: Revealing the Veil Nebula

The Veil Nebula, left behind by the explosion of a massive star thousands of years ago, is one of the largest and most spectacular supernova remnants in the sky.

The image was taken with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in November 1994 and August 1997.

Deep space runner up: The Veil Nebula in Cygnus by Martin Pugh. The Veil Nebula is the remnant of a supernova explosion that occurred thousands of years ago. At the time of the explosion the expanding cloud of gas was probably as bright as a crescent Moon and would have been visible from Earth
