SpaceX Falcon 9's Lower Stage Launcher crashes back onto the deck of the floating platform that was intended as its safe haven.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has released pictures from his firms recent failed attempt to land a rocket on a boat.

The images show the first stage of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket hitting the boat at a 45 degree angle before exploding.

Looking closely at the images above, you can see the steerable fins at the top of the rocket, designed to bring it in for a safe landing.

Musk has previously said that the fins ran out of hydraulic fluid just before landing, meaning the rocket lost control, so SpaceX will be adding more fluid for its next attempt.

The rocket came in too fast, destroying its landing legs, and then the leftover fuel ignited and it exploded (see below).

"Full RUD (rapid unscheduled disassembly) event. Ship is fine minor repairs. Exciting day!" tweeted Musk.

Virgin Galactic crash: last moments of SpaceShipTwo

This is the moment Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo rocket exploded in the air during a test flight, killing one pilot and seriously injuring another.

The rocket belonging to hedonist billionaire Sir Richard Branson's space tourism venture exploded in a fireball during a test flight before crashing in the Mojave Desert in California.

A Virgin Galactic spokesman said the rocket "suffered a serious anomaly" after a test flight conducted by partner business Scaled Composites.

One eyewitness to the event, Doug Messier, managing editor of Parabolicarc.com, saw SpaceShipTwo's engine sputter when it first came to life during the test flight, after WhiteKnightTwo released it.

"It looked like the engine didn't perform properly," Messier told Space.com's Tariq Malik. "Normally it would burn and it would burn for a certain period of time. It looked like it may have started and then stopped and then started again."

Then, Messier saw the ship break apart. "I didn't see an explosion, but it definitely broke into pieces," he added.

Sir Richard wrote on Twitter: "Thoughts with all @virgingalactic & Scaled, thanks for all your messages of support. I'm flying to Mojave immediately to be with the team."

At a press conference in California, Virgin Galactic chief executive George Whitesides said: "Space is hard and today was a tough day.

"We are going to be supporting the investigation as we figure out what happened today. We are going to get through it."

"The future rests in many ways on hard days like this but we believe we owe it to the folks who were flying these vehicles as well as the folks who have been working so hard on them to understand this and to move forward."

He said it was the first time the rocket had been flown using a new fuel formulation.

"It had been proven and tested on the ground many times," he added.

Mr Whitesides said the pilots were employed by Scaled Composites. He added that the injured pilot was "as well as could be expected".

SpaceShipTwo has been under development at Mojave Air and Spaceport .

This venture was not about the advancement of science or for the benefit of humankind. This was a 'for profit' venture.

The pursuit of fame, increased revenues and bottom-line profits by Virgin's hedonistic billionaire figure-head has now led to the premature and terrifying death of one man and crippling injuries and pain of another.

NASA crashes helicopter to study safety

NASA researchers will drop a 45-foot-long helicopter fuselage from a height of about 30 feet to test improved seat belts and seats and advance experimental techniques and crashworthiness data.

NASA is collaborating with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army and Federal Aviation Administration on the Transport Rotorcraft Airframe Crash Test Bed full-scale crash tests at Langley's Landing and Impact Research Facility.

"We have instrumented a former Marine helicopter airframe with cameras and accelerometers," said lead test engineer Martin Annett.

"Almost 40 cameras inside and outside the helicopter will record how 13 crash test dummies react before, during and after impact."

During the test, onboard computers will record more than 350 channels of data as the helicopter is swung by cables, like a pendulum, into a bed of soil.

Just before impact, pyrotechnic devices release the suspension cables from the helicopter to allow free flight.

The helicopter will hit the ground at about 30 mph. The impact condition represents a severe but survivable condition under both civilian and military requirements.

For the first time ever in any test, technicians installed a video game motion sensor in the helicopter. "We want to see if it is useful as an additional way to track the movements of the dummies," said test engineer Justin Littell.

The outside of the fuselage also is new for this test. Technicians painted one entire side in black polka dots over a white background—a photographic technique called full field photogrammetry. Each dot represents a data point.

High-speed cameras filming at 500 images per second track each dot, so after over the drop researchers can plot and see exactly how the fuselage buckled, bent, cracked or collapsed under crash loads.

Another crash test of a similar helicopter equipped with additional technology, including composite airframe retrofits, is planned for next year.

Both tests are part of the Rotary Wing Project in the Fundamental Aeronautics Program of NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate.

The US Navy provided the CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter fuselages, seats, crash test dummies and other experiments for the test.

The Army contributed a litter experiment with a crash test dummy.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provided a side-facing specialized crash test dummy and part of the data acquisition system.

Cobham Life Support-St. Petersburg, a division of CONAX Florida Corporation, also contributed an active restraint system for the cockpit.

NASA will use the results of both tests in efforts to improve rotorcraft performance and efficiency, in part by assessing the reliability of high performance, lightweight composite materials.

Researchers also want to increase industry knowledge and create more complete computer models that can be used to design better helicopters.

The ultimate goal of NASA rotary wing research is to help make helicopters and other vertical take-off and landing vehicles more serviceable—able to carry more passengers and cargo—quicker, quieter, safer and greener. Improved designs might allow helicopters to be used more extensively in the airspace system.

NASA Grail Mission: Twin Probes' Lunar Crash



Two NASA moon probes are slated to slam into the rim of a lunar crater today (Dec. 17), and the space agency will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the dramatic action.

The twin Grail spacecraft, known as Ebb and Flow, will crash intentionally near the moon's north pole at 5:28 p.m. EST (2228 GMT) today, bringing their gravity-mapping mission to a spectacular close.

The event will be broadcast on NASA TV and streamed live on the agency's website, beginning at 5 p.m. EST (2200 GMT).

The coverage should last about 35 minutes and will include interviews with Grail team members. The impact site will be in shadow at the time of the crash, so no video of Ebb and Flow's violent demise is expected, NASA officials said.

A Cycle Helmet That Calls for Help When You’ve Crashed

So every time you come to a skidding stop or clumsily dismount or fall on your face, the paramedics won’t show up. You can fund this little device at Indiegogo.

The Atlantic Cities has the one caveat:
There is one big catch to this potentially life-saving device: Should you be in a location with no cellphone service, it doesn’t work. So don’t go around crashing into fir trees just because you think somebody will carry you to the hospital.
