CSA DEXTRE: Space Station Robotic Handyman To Replace Canadarm2 Camera - Video



Dextre, the Canadian robotic handyman on board the International Space Station, has done several repair and maintenance jobs to date, as well as the Robotic Refueling Mission technology demonstration, when he became the first robot to refuel a mock satellite in space.

The space bot is now poised to claim a first for robotkind: self-repair. This animation shows how Dextre will swap two cameras on Canadarm2 and the mobile base, which together form the three main components of Canada's Mobile Servicing System.

Dextre will start by retrieving a faulty camera located near Canadarm2's elbow joint. Since the camera is functional, but produces hazy images, Dextre will move it to a less critical location on the mobile base.

Dextre will then head over to Japan's Kibo module to fetch a camera from the module's transfer airlock, a type of sliding drawer that can be depressurized, where the station's crew will place it for Dextre to retrieve.

Dextre will install the new camera on Canadarm2's elbow joint, where it will provide critical views of the robotic arm's movements.

In addition to repairing and replacing two valuable cameras used for robotic operations, Dextre's task has far-reaching implications for what robots could do in the future.

Technologies for on-orbit robotic servicing, repairing and refueling satellites in space, hold great potential for addressing the issue of space debris, a growing concern for the world's space agencies.

The work done by Dextre today is laying the foundation for the future when one day, robots will be sent to repair, refuel and reposition orbiting satellites.

On-orbit robotic servicing could therefore save satellite operators from the significant costs of building and launching new replacement satellites, and help reduce space debris.

SpaceX Dragon Grappled to Canadarm2

On Sunday, April 20, 2014, the Expedition 39 crew aboard the International Space Station welcomed nearly two-and-a-half tons of supplies and scientific payloads to the station with the arrival of the third SpaceX Dragon commercial cargo spacecraft.

This image of SpaceX Dragon grappled by Canadarm2 was sent down by Flight Engineer Steve Swanson to Instagram with the message, "We have a Dragon. All is good."

With SpaceX Dragon securely in the grasp of Canadarm2 , the robotics officer at Mission Control remotely operated the arm to install the capsule to its port on the Earth-facing side of the Harmony (ESA built Node 2) module.

Once SpaceX Dragon was in place, Flight Engineer Rick Mastracchio monitored the Common Berthing Mechanism operations for first and second stage capture of the cargo ship, assuring that the vehicle was securely attached to the station with a hard mate.

Second stage capture was completed at 10:06 a.m. EDT as the station flew 260 miles above Brazil.

SpaceX Dragon Arrives at ISS: CanadArm2 grapple

SpaceX's unmanned cargo freighter Dragon arrived at the International Space Station this morning carrying supplies for the orbiting outpost.

The arrival had been delayed from yesterday after a temporary glitch with the vehicle's thrusters.

Dragon was captured by the station's robotic arm, Canadarm2 at 9.31 GMT. The robotic arm was operated by Expedition 34 Commander Kevin Ford with assistance from flight engineers Tom Marshburn and Chris Hadfield.

Commander Ford said: "As they say, it’s not where you start, but where you finish that counts, and you guys really finished this one on the mark. You’re aboard, and we’ve got lots of science on there to bring aboard to get done."

The final phase of the vehicle's arrival is for Mission Control to remotely operate the station's robotic arm to guide the capsule to its port on the Earth-facing side of the Harmony module.

The berthing mechanism will ensure the craft is properly attached and sealed to its port.

Japan's H-II Transfer Vehicle-3 Being Readied For Release by Canadarm2

The International Space Station's Canadarm2 unberths the unpiloted Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV-3), filled with trash and unneeded items, in preparation for its release from the station.

JAXA astronaut Aki Hoshide and NASA astronaut Joe Acaba, both Expedition 32 flight engineers, used the station's robot arm to grapple the HTV-3 and unberth it from the Earth-facing port of the Harmony node.

The cargo craft was released at 11:50 a.m. (EDT) on Sept. 12, 2012.
