Wealthy Chinese buy space tourism flight tickets

More than 300 Chinese space enthusiasts have booked tickets costing nearly $100,000 for a five minute trip to outer space, official media in oppressive China reported.

The 305 buyers snapped up tickets for a trip with Dutch firm Space Expedition Corp (SXC) when they went on sale on Taobao, an online retail website, the state-run China Daily reported.

The trips will take place in a two-man craft that remains in space for five to six minutes, giving the tourist a rarely seen view and the experience of weightlessness, the report said.

The tickets were sold for 599,999 yuan ($96,000) it said, adding that four entrepreneurs from the southwestern city of Chengdu and two from the commercial hub of Shanghai were among those who signed up.

The Taobao page selling the tickets was only available on June 12th, a spokesman for the website told reporters. A screenshot seen by reporters confirmed that transactions had been made.

No date for the trip was given. Despite a flurry of interest in space tourism in recent years, no private firms have yet been able to launch regular trips.

Participants, who must weigh no more than 125 kilograms (275 pounds), are required to receive flight simulation and weightlessness training before their trip.

China has its own aggressive, dominating and military-run space programme, which in the last decades has sent astronauts into orbit and landed a rover on the moon.

To date oppressive China is not interested in the peaceful exploitation of Space or Space Tourism by commercial aerospace firms.

Pakistan adopts Chinese GPS satellite system, despite cheap, unreliable service

Pakistan is set to become the fifth Asian country to use China's cheap domestic satellite navigation system which was launched as a rival to the US global positioning system.

The Beidou, or Compass, system started providing services to civilians in the region in December and is expected to provide global coverage by 2020. It also has military applications.

Thailand, China, Laos and Brunei already use the cheap Chinese system, which currently consists of 16 operational satellites, with 30 more due to join the system.

Huang Lei, international business director of BDStar Navigation, which promotes Beidou, stated that the company would build a network of stations in Pakistan to enhance the location accuracy of Beidou.

He said building the network would cost tens of millions of dollars.

American website Defensenews.com reported early May that Pakistani military experts were in favour of using the Chinese system, even though the availability of the signal could not be guaranteed in case of conflict.

But according to one of them, Pakistan "cannot place its trust in the United States."

"Pakistan's armed forces cannot rely on US GPS because of its questionable availability during a conflict that has overtones of nuclear escalation," former Pakistan Air Force pilot Kaiser Tufail told the site.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang travels next week to Pakistan, a long time ally, after a visit to India.

NASA steps up security. Blocks access by Chinese to stop Data Loss

NASA has shut down access to an online database and banned new requests from Chinese and some other foreign nationals seeking access to its facilities amid mounting concerns about espionage and export control violations, the U.S. space agency's administrator said on Wednesday.

The security measures include a complete ban on remote computer access by Chinese and some other non-U.S. contractors already working at NASA centers, agency chief Charles Bolden said at a congressional oversight hearing in Washington.

The tightening of security follows the arrest on Saturday of Chinese national Bo Jiang, a former NASA contractor.

He was attempting to return to China with "a large amount of information technology that he may not have been entitled to possess," said Representative Frank Wolf, a Republican whose Virginia district includes the NASA Langley Research Center, where Jiang worked.

The FBI arrested Jiang at Dulles International Airport outside Washington, where he had boarded a flight to Beijing, court papers provided by Wolf's office show.

Jiang was arraigned on Monday in U.S. district court in Norfolk, Virginia. A detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

He is charged with lying to federal law enforcement agents about computer hardware he planned to take with him to China, the court documents show.

Wolf, who chairs the House Appropriations subcommittee on commerce, justice and science, identified Jiang last week during another hearing on possible security lapses at NASA field centers.

"We know that China is an active, aggressive espionage threat," Wolf, a longtime China critic, said during Wednesday's hearing.

"A recent White House report said that the technologies NASA works on - aerospace and aeronautics - are those that the Chinese have most heavily targeted," Wolf added.

NASA is cooperating with federal investigators, in addition to conducting two internal reviews, Bolden said.

The reviews are expected to be completed within a week, likely to be followed by an external investigation, Bolden added.

In the interim, NASA closed its Technical Reports database "while we review whether there is a risk of export control documents being made available on this website," Bolden said.

Other security upgrades include a moratorium on granting any new access to NASA facilities for individuals from China, Myanmar, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Uzbekistan.

In addition, 281 foreign nationals, including 192 from China, who currently have access to NASA facilities have had their remote computer access shut down, Bolden said.

"This is about national security, not about NASA security, and I take that personally. I'm responsible and I will hold myself accountable once those reviews are completed," Bolden said.

Russian Satellite Hit by Debris from Chinese Anti-Satellite Test

A small Russian spacecraft in orbit appears to have been struck by Chinese space junk from a 2007 anti-satellite test, likely damaging the Russian craft, possibly severely.

The space collision appears to have occurred on Jan. 22, when a chunk of China's Fengyun 1C satellite, which was intentionally destroyed by that country in a 2007 anti-satellite demonstration, struck the Russian spacecraft, according to an analysis by the Center for Space Standards & Innovation (CSSI) in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

CSSI technical program manager T.S. Kelso reported that the collision involved the Chinese space junk and Russia's small Ball Lens In The Space (BLITS) retroreflector satellite, a 17-pound (7.5 kilograms).

The Fengyun 1C satellite debris was created during China's anti-satellite test on Jan. 11, 2007, and has posed a threat to satellites and crewed spacecraft ever since.


Evidence of the space junk collision was first reported on Feb. 4 by Russian scientists Vasiliy Yurasov and Andrey Nazarenko, both with the Institute for Precision Instrument Engineering (IPIE) in Moscow.

They reported a "significant change" in the orbit of the BLITS satellite to the CSSI.

It is not immediately clear whether the satellite is merely wounded or completely incapacitated.

The space collision is the second substantial in-space accident between an active spacecraft and a defunct satellite or piece of space debris.

In February 2009, a U.S. communications satellite was destroyed when it was hit by a defunct Russian military satellite, creating a vast debris cloud in orbit.
The BLITS satellite is a nanosatellite consisting of two outer hemispheres made of a low-refraction-index glass, and an inner ball lens made of a high-refraction-index glass. It was launched in 2009 as a secondary payload on a Russian rocket and tracked by the International Laser Ranging Service for precision satellite laser-ranging experiments.

In addition to noticing the satellite's change in orbit, Yurasov and Nazarenko also detected changes in the spacecraft's spin velocity and attitude.

Satellite laser ranging use short-pulse lasers and state-of-the-art optical receivers and timing electronics to measure the two-way time of flight (and hence distance) from ground stations to retroreflector arrays on Earth orbiting satellites.

Destroyed Chinese satellite close to ISS

Debris from a satellite destroyed in 2007 by a Chinese missile is in the vicinity of the International Space Station and astronauts are ready to take cover if required, a Russian official said Friday.

The shooting down of the Chinese weather satellite Feng Yun 1C by a ground missile launched from China at the time sparked international alarm and concern about the creation of dangerous space debris.

"If the calculations show that the debris is approaching the station at an unacceptably close range, the six astronauts will receive the order to take shelter in the two Russian Soyuz spacecraft which are docked with the ISS," an official at mission control outside Moscow told the Interfax news agency.

The official described the flight path of the debris as "dangerous" and said it was already too late to carry out a manoeuvre to "divert the station from the rubbish".

The official was not named and there was no further comment from the Russian side.

However NASA spokesperson Kelly Humphries played down the situation, saying that while the debris had been monitored, its distance from the station was substantial.

"A possible conjunction with a piece of the Chinese Feng Yun satellite debris was monitored by ballistics specialists late last night and overnight," the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

"It was determined, however, that the miss distance is substantial and no debris avoidance manoeuvre will be required."

The shooting down of the satellite was the first known such intercept test by any country in two decades and China's confirmation of the action at the time sparked a sharp rebuke from the United States.

Endangered Siberian Tigers Exploited by Chinese Authorities


A beautifil, rare and endangered species, the Siberian tigers, is compelled to sit up and beg for the amusement of dumb visitors. Part of an entertainment sideshow at a zoo on the second day of the Lunar New Year in Fuzhou, China.
China continues to treat endangered species with contempt and force them to perform humiliating acts for the amesement of an ignorant public.
This sends the completely wrong message; that these animals are put on this Earth for the exploitation and amusement of humanity.

Killer ladybird invasion takes hold in Scotland

KILLER alien ladybirds are breeding in Scotland for the first time, experts have discovered.

A larva of a Chinese harlequin ladybird (Harmonia axyridis) has been spotted in Glasgow – providing the first evidence that the species is breeding in this country.

Previously, only a handful of the insects have been seen in Scotland, meaning there was hope they would not take hold.

Now experts say there may be little that can be done to stop their spread.

Harlequin ladybirds, introduced from China to control aphids, are larger than our native insects.

They eat native ladybirds, butterfly eggs and other insects, and have caused havoc in other European countries and the south of England.

They spread rapidly, putting other species at risk.

Craig McAdam, conservation officer (Scotland) for Buglife, the invertebrate conservation trust, said the discovery was bad news.

"The possibility that there is now a breeding population of the harlequin ladybird in Scotland is extremely worrying," he said.

"Buglife believes that the issue of invasive species such as the harlequin ladybird should be taken very seriously.

"The consequences of inaction on this issue are potentially highly damaging and costly to reverse."

The harlequin larva was discovered by RSPB Scotland employee and entomologist Norman Storie.

He had been challenged to find another, rare type of ladybird in the city by a friend.

Instead of finding the species he was looking for, a 14-spot, he discovered the 6mm-long baby harlequin.

It was crawling around on top of an electricity street lighting box near Kelvingrove Park in the West End in the sun.

Mr Storie kept the larva, in the hope that it would pupate and turn into a harlequin – so he could prove it was that species. However, it died before that happened.

But experts have been able to identify the species from the larva. The dead larva has been donated to the Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow.

A single ladybird can lay 1,000 eggs, meaning there are likely to be further baby harlequins in Glasgow.

The most common form of harlequins in the UK are either orange with 15-21 black spots or black with 2-4 red or orange spots. They were introduced to both America and Europe as a form of aphid pest control in the 20th century.

However, they spread very quickly and there are fears they put other species at risk.

Harlequins were first recorded in Britain in 2004, but are already now widespread in the south of England.

Paul Walton, Head of Habitats and Species for RSPB Scotland, said: "When people move animals and plants around the world and release them, resident wildlife sometimes cannot cope.

"The harlequin ladybird is a new predator introduced by people and might have a significant impact on other wild insects. Little can be done to slow its spread now, but we should see this as a wake-up call.

"We should all be vigilant to prevent the introduction of damaging species outside their natural range, particularly in lakes, rivers and islands."

Robin Payne, invasive species expert at Scottish Natural Heritage, agreed that the harlequin's breeding was very worrying. "It's a matter of serious concern," he said. "Sadly it seemed inevitable that we would find it becoming established in Scotland in time."

The Harlequin Ladybird Survey, which maps the spread of the species in the UK with the help of sightings from the public, describes it as "the most invasive ladybird on Earth".

It warns that the creature has the potential to jeopardise the future of many of the 46 species of ladybird resident in Britain.
